Why Hockey Fans Cannot Miss the NHL’s Wildest Night

Why Hockey Fans Cannot Miss the NHL’s Wildest Night

  • By Mia Walker
  • October 13, 2026

Tuesday, October 13, brings one of the most concentrated spectacles on the hockey calendar. The NHL Frozen Frenzy places all 32 clubs on the schedule, with 16 games spread across one packed evening and every result adding another layer to the early 2026–27 season.

The format is designed for constant movement. The previous edition produced 109 goals, visiting teams finished 9-6-1, and five contests required overtime or a shootout. Another high-scoring night would give fans plenty of reasons to keep switching between games.

One Schedule, Three National Broadcast Windows

ESPN’s main presentation features three nationally televised matchups. New Jersey visits Detroit at 6 p.m. ET, Colorado travels to Dallas for an 8:30 p.m. ET start, and Boston meets San Jose in the 11 p.m. ET finale.

The other games begin at staggered times, allowing viewers to follow the entire league through NHL Power Play on the ESPN App. John Buccigross and Kevin Weekes will also lead five hours of continuous whip-around coverage across ESPN2, Disney+ and the ESPN App.

Featured matchup Start time Main storyline
New Jersey at Detroit 6 p.m. ET Dylan Larkin’s turbulent relationship with the Red Wings
Colorado at Dallas 8:30 p.m. ET Two Western contenders testing their early form
Boston at San Jose 11 p.m. ET David Pastrnak’s leadership against Macklin Celebrini’s Sharks

Atlantic Division Has No Shortage of Drama

Boston enters the night with a new captain at the centre of its identity. David Pastrnak is the 28th captain in Bruins history, a recognition that follows four consecutive 100-point seasons beginning in 2022–23. During that span, he has collected 436 points in 329 games, including 254 goals; Pavel Zacha, Boston’s next-leading scorer, trails him by 206 points.

Detroit’s most compelling storyline belongs to Dylan Larkin. The captain asked to be traded despite having five seasons remaining on his contract, and the Red Wings removed him from the captaincy after his return. Home supporters even booed him while he watched from the stands injured, whereas Montreal fans later greeted him with chants demanding his arrival.

Other Atlantic matchups carry their own history. Buffalo faces Montreal after Alex Newhook’s Game 7 overtime goal eliminated the Sabres last spring. Florida has placed brothers Matthew and Brady Tkachuk together on a line with Sam Bennett, although Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand remain out. Tampa Bay relies on two-time Hart Trophy winner Nikita Kucherov against the Rangers, who defeated the Lightning 5-1 on opening night.

Toronto is also watching the rapid development of 18-year-old Gavin McKenna. After a subdued first appearance, the young forward responded with four points over his next three games.

Metropolitan Matchups Carry High Stakes

Carolina arrives as the defending champion and an early favourite after earning 11 of a possible 14 points. Sebastian Aho has led the attack with six goals and five assists, while the Hurricanes’ only regulation defeat came against Washington, their opponent again during Frozen Frenzy.

The Rangers have been forced into an unexpected goaltending change. Igor Shesterkin sustained a knee injury that ended his season after only five games, leaving the crease to 24-year-old Dylan Garand.

Philadelphia’s opening has been even harsher. The Flyers began 0-7 and have already heard supporters call for Tocchet’s dismissal before hosting Seattle. Washington, meanwhile, offers a historic farewell: Alex Ovechkin has said this will be his final season with the Capitals, and the NHL’s all-time goals leader has already scored his first goal of the campaign.

Western Stars Chase Records and Redemption

The Central and Pacific divisions supply several of the evening’s biggest individual storylines. Jack Eichel has recorded 12 points in six games and is pursuing the first 100-point season in Vegas Golden Knights history. San Jose’s 20-year-old Macklin Celebrini is coming off a 115-point season and a fourth-place finish in MVP voting.

Edmonton looks like one of the conference’s leading contenders under new head coach Mike Babcock, but the Oilers face a Utah Mammoth roster built to challenge them. Patrick Kane returns to Chicago, where he won three Stanley Cups, while Sidney Crosby searches for his first goal after opening the season with two assists in six games.

  1. Watch the early Detroit game for the night’s most personal storyline surrounding Larkin.
  2. Follow the middle portion of the schedule for the Colorado–Dallas test and the developing Western race.
  3. Stay late for Boston against San Jose, where Pastrnak and Celebrini represent two very different stages of offensive leadership.

Winnipeg is managing without suspended goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and will lean on Stuart Skinner, who owns a .920 save percentage. Vancouver has received an encouraging start from Elias Pettersson, whose eight points in seven games have revived optimism. Dallas is also evaluating Jason Robertson, a pending free agent whose performance could influence his next contract.

A Full League Snapshot in a Single Evening

Frozen Frenzy is more than a collection of games. It is a fast-moving test of contenders, rebuilding teams, emerging stars, injured leaders and franchises facing difficult questions. With every club active and the action unfolding almost continuously, the event offers the clearest one-night view of the NHL’s early-season landscape.
