Toronto’s Milestone Night Meets Calgary’s Late Surge

Toronto heads into Monday’s meeting with Calgary carrying the stronger record and the hotter overall attack, but the Flames have created their own challenge with three consecutive victories. The game begins at 8:30 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Saddledome, where the Maple Leafs will try to extend their winning run to five games.

Two Teams Arrive With Momentum

Toronto is 7-4-2 after producing its most emphatic result of the season: a 7-2 road victory over Edmonton. The Maple Leafs received a 30-save performance from Anthony Stolarz and contributions from throughout the lineup rather than relying on one scoring unit.

Jack Roslovic, Auston Matthews, Troy Stecher, Zack MacEwen, and Vinni Lettieri each scored in the victory. William Nylander added two goals, including the 300th of his NHL career. He reached that milestone in 763 games, making him the fourth-fastest Swedish player to reach 300 goals, and he now has eight goals this season.

Calgary enters at 4-6-0, yet its three-game winning streak has changed the tone around the team. Playing at home gives the Flames an opportunity to slow Toronto’s attack, protect the middle of the ice, and force the visitors to create chances through longer possessions.

Matthews Could Reach Another Career Landmark

Matthews needs only one point to reach 800 in the regular season. A goal or assist would make him the fastest player in Maple Leafs history to reach that figure and the third-quickest American skater in NHL history.

His production has already been central to Toronto’s start. Matthews has scored nine times in 13 games, while both he and Kirill Marchenko carry five-game point streaks on the road into Calgary. Nylander’s milestone adds another storyline to a Toronto lineup that is generating offense from both its stars and its depth.

The special teams matchup could prove decisive. Toronto’s power play has operated at approximately 30 percent, and the penalty kill had denied 30 consecutive opposing opportunities before Edmonton finally scored late Saturday. Calgary must limit unnecessary penalties because giving Matthews and Nylander repeated power-play chances could quickly erase the home-ice advantage.

How Calgary Can Keep the Game Close

The Flames do not need to match Toronto chance for chance. Their better route is a compact, disciplined game that reduces odd-man rushes and keeps the Maple Leafs from attacking with speed through the neutral zone.

Calgary has generated shots but has not consistently converted them into goals. Matthew Coronato has two goals in 10 games, while Aydar Suniev and Joel Farabee are among the Calgary players appearing in pregame goal-scoring projections. The Flames need one of those secondary options to finish opportunities if Toronto concentrates its defensive attention on Matthews and Nylander.

The opening period may establish the entire rhythm. A fast Toronto start would force Calgary to take more risks and abandon the slower structure that gives it the best chance of frustrating the visitors. If the Flames stay level early, the pressure shifts toward Toronto to solve a tighter home defense.

Betting Outlook and Player Markets

Early sportsbook prices made Toronto the favorite, with the Maple Leafs generally listed between -145 and -164 on the moneyline and Calgary ranging from approximately +122 to +136. The puck line was Toronto -1.5 at roughly +146 to +168, while Calgary was around -175 to -198 at +1.5. The projected total was 6.5 goals.

Model projections gave Toronto a modest edge rather than overwhelming support, with win probabilities generally falling between 52 and 57 percent. One model put the Maple Leafs at 55.4 percent to win, while also identifying the under 6.5 as a potential value angle.

The total is less straightforward. Toronto games have exceeded 6.5 combined goals in eight of 13 contests, but Calgary has gone over that threshold in only four of 10. The teams average 6.2 combined goals per game, leaving the market close to the expected scoring level. One projection landed at 6.6 goals, while another leaned under.

Early anytime-goal prices included Matthews at +120, Nylander at +155, Marchenko at +170, and Coronato at +220. Matthews led the scoring models at about 38 percent, followed closely by Nylander at approximately 37 percent.

  1. Watch whether Calgary can remain out of the penalty box against Toronto’s high-performing power play.
  2. Track how the Flames defend Matthews and Nylander during five-on-five play.
  3. Pay close attention to the first 20 minutes, since an early Toronto lead could force Calgary into a less comfortable style.
