Could United’s Next Appointment End the Old Trafford Crisis?

Manchester United’s managerial uncertainty has intensified as the club struggles near the Premier League relegation places. Michael Carrick remains in charge for now, but an eight-match winless run has pushed the question of his successor into the spotlight. Antonio Conte has been linked with the position, although the Italian has publicly rejected claims that advanced discussions are taking place.

A Defeat That Deepened United’s Problems

United’s latest setback came at Old Trafford, where Bournemouth secured a 3-0 victory on October 25. Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored for the visitors, leaving the home side with more questions than answers.

Bruno Fernandes spent the entire match on the substitutes’ bench, adding another layer to an already difficult week. The result extended United’s winless sequence to eight matches, according to reports, and followed a damaging 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como only four days earlier.

Fernandes had reportedly questioned Carrick’s tactical approach after the Como match. Carrick nevertheless left his captain out against Bournemouth, explaining that the decision was based solely on football considerations.

The contrast with September is stark. United had beaten Sabah 4-0 during that month, and their return to the Champions League briefly suggested that the team was moving in the right direction. That optimism has disappeared quickly as poor results and internal tension have taken over the conversation.

Why Carrick’s Position Is Becoming Difficult to Defend

United’s early league record explains why the board is examining alternatives. The club collected only six points from its opening six Premier League fixtures, a start described as its weakest since 1986. Opta data also indicated that seven points after seven matches would represent United’s lowest total at that stage of a Premier League campaign.

Carrick earned the permanent role after guiding the team to third place last season. That finish restored Champions League football, and his contract was signed only about five months ago. The speed of the current reversal has therefore made the situation especially uncomfortable for the club’s decision-makers.

Even after the Bournemouth defeat, some supporters continued to sing Carrick’s name while directing their frustration towards the board. Those reactions suggest that a section of the fan base sees the crisis as a recruitment and ownership failure rather than a problem caused by the head coach alone.

Reports indicate that Carrick is expected to remain in charge for the next fixture against Chelsea. That temporary continuation should not automatically be interpreted as long-term backing. A further defeat could transform speculation into an immediate decision.

Conte Rejects Claims of Advanced Negotiations

Conte addressed the rumours on Instagram on October 23. He stated that he was not involved in advanced negotiations with any club and dismissed reports that he had already demanded major financial terms or complete control over football operations.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager has been without a club since leaving Napoli by mutual agreement on June 4. His spell in Naples ended after he won Serie A in his first season, followed by a second-place finish in 2025-26.

Conte’s achievements explain why his name continues to appear whenever an elite job becomes available. He has won the Italian championship with Juventus, Inter and Napoli, becoming the only manager reported to have achieved that feat with all three clubs. He also won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2016-17, his first season in England.

His record includes several rapid transformations. Chelsea and Napoli had each finished 10th before Conte took charge, yet both clubs quickly became title contenders under his leadership.

The Risk Behind a Conte Appointment

The principal concern is not his ability to produce immediate improvement but whether the partnership could last. Juventus is the only club where Conte remained for more than two seasons, while his other managerial spells ended within two years or less.

Former Inter player Ashley Young has also described the demanding nature of Conte’s methods. Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Young recalled post-match meetings that could continue for three or four hours after a defeat. He also characterized some training sessions as less engaging than expected.

Those details matter at United, where the club has repeatedly struggled to maintain stability during periods of transition. Conte could provide urgency and discipline, but his confrontational style might create another short-term solution if the board and manager do not share the same long-term plan.

Who Else Could Replace Carrick?

Conte is one name in a broader group of possible replacements. BBC Sport reported that Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann had emerged as early contenders, while Unai Emery was also admired inside the club.

  1. Eddie Howe: The former Newcastle manager is available after leaving on July 30 and is reportedly open to taking the United job. Jason Wilcox is said to favour Howe, while other reports have identified him as a leading option.
  2. Julian Nagelsmann: The former Bayern Munich and Germany coach is also under consideration. His availability and modern tactical reputation could appeal to United’s recruitment team.
  3. Unai Emery: The Aston Villa manager has attracted admiration, but United would need to negotiate with Villa. Reports have suggested that compensation could reach approximately £20 million.
  4. Antonio Conte: His trophy record makes him a compelling short-term candidate, but his public statement confirms that no advanced agreement currently exists.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes has argued in favour of Conte, suggesting that the Italian could impose authority and force difficult conversations inside the squad. Whether that approach would produce lasting progress remains uncertain.

The Chelsea Match Could Set the Timetable

The next fixture will reveal how much patience remains. United’s supporters have watched managers arrive with ambitious plans, followed by declining dressing-room standards and delayed boardroom action.

A defeat at Chelsea would increase the pressure on Carrick and make the succession debate impossible to ignore. Conte may not be negotiating with United, but Howe, Nagelsmann and Emery demonstrate that the club has several possible directions. The decisive issue is whether United choose another urgent rescue operation or finally commit to a stable project.
