How Philadelphia Turned a 29-Point Deficit Into History

How Philadelphia Turned a 29-Point Deficit Into History

  • October 23, 2026

The Philadelphia 76ers appeared finished before halftime. Instead, a defensive adjustment, sharper ball control and timely execution produced a stunning 114-106 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Philadelphia.

Tyrese Maxey led the turnaround with 32 points and six assists, while Joel Embiid added 24. LeBron James contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Jaylen Brown finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. The rally became the largest comeback in 76ers history during the play-by-play era and the biggest comeback of James’ 24-year NBA career.

Cleveland’s Early Control Disappeared After the Break

Cleveland dominated the opening half by repeatedly attacking Philadelphia in the middle of the pick-and-roll. The Cavaliers used 27 direct screens before halftime and averaged 1.08 points on those possessions, creating clean opportunities and forcing the 76ers into uncomfortable rotations.

Philadelphia also made its own problems worse. The 76ers committed 15 turnovers in the first half, allowing Cleveland to turn defensive pressure into transition scoring. By the interval, the home crowd had grown frustrated enough to boo the team off the court.

The Cavaliers’ advantage eventually reached 29 points, the largest lead Cleveland has surrendered in the play-by-play era. Donovan Mitchell appeared to be in complete command after scoring 30 points through three quarters, but the game changed when Philadelphia altered its defensive coverage.

Nick Nurse’s Adjustment Sparked the Comeback

Head coach Nick Nurse acknowledged that Philadelphia had not found an answer for Cleveland’s preferred screening action. After halftime, the 76ers changed assignments and challenged the Cavaliers’ ball handlers from different angles.

The result was immediate. Cleveland ran 20 direct picks in the second half but produced only 0.56 points per possession on them. The same action that had generated reliable offence earlier suddenly became difficult to use.

Philadelphia also stopped giving the ball away. The 76ers committed only two turnovers after halftime, while Cleveland recorded 15. That difference removed many of the Cavaliers’ easy scoring chances and gave Philadelphia repeated opportunities to attack a retreating defence.

Mitchell’s production reflected the change. After collecting 30 points over the first three quarters, he managed only two in the fourth, both coming after the result was effectively decided.

Maxey and Embiid Completed the Turnaround

Philadelphia began the third quarter with an 8-0 burst and won the period 37-21. The surge reduced Cleveland’s advantage to eight entering the final quarter, but the 76ers still needed another strong finish to complete the escape.

Maxey supplied the pace. During the rally, James found him in transition, and Maxey immediately launched a three-pointer without putting the ball on the floor. The shot forced a Cleveland timeout, and Maxey turned toward the supporters behind the scorer’s table to celebrate as the crowd erupted.

Embiid delivered the decisive moment with 6:54 remaining. He rose over Jarrett Allen and connected on a 16-foot jumper to give Philadelphia its first lead of the night. The 76ers stayed ahead from there, closing the game with the confidence of a team that had finally solved Cleveland’s attack.

James supplied a steady veteran presence in his first home game with Philadelphia, while Brown added key scoring in the fourth quarter. VJ Edgecombe also contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

The victory offered Philadelphia a memorable early-season statement, but James also recognized the warning inside it. A 29-point deficit is not a formula for sustained success. The lasting lesson was more practical: defensive flexibility and disciplined possessions can transform a game that seems beyond repair.
